What bits among that particular cultural ruin are worth keeping - or tossing, re-inventing, restoring? This seminar surveys the post-apocalyptic Evangelicaldom for signs of hope amid the rubble. UNLESS YOU BECOME LIKE A LITTLE CHILD: PRAYER & PLAY (Neil Taylor, 1 session) Have you run aground with your devotional life and quiet time? Exploring the mysterious connections between prayer and play can open a locked door to the path of spiritual renewal. LIFE IN COMMUNITY (OR "JEAN VANIER'S GREATEST HITS") (Neil Taylor, 1 session) Whether you're a monk in a cloister or a member of a local church, Christian community is something that must be lived out so that we can reflect God's love to others. Come as Neil shares from his many years living in Christian community, drawing also upon his long acquaintance and appreciation for the writings of Jean Vanier, founder of the L'Arche community. FLIRTING WITH MONASTICISM: FINDING GOD ON ANCIENT PATHS (Karen Sloan, 4 sessions) For centuries, many believers have followed Jesus in ways that have seemed alien to outsiders. Yet organized around shared commitments and structures, monastic Christians have found ways to live far more faith-full lives then they could have on their own. Through storytelling and interactive experiences, this seminar will explore ancient expressions of Christian faith with an eye to learning what might be applied to help non-monastic Christians live more faithfully. DIVINE PRESENCES: THE SACRAMENTAL LIFE (Jonathan Case, 3 sessions) "Embodiment" is a buzzword for Post-Evangelical/Emergent -types, yet even within that most interesting conversation, sacramental theology remains pretty sketchy. How is the Divine Presence conveyed by "mundane" materials - water, bread, and wine (or grape juice!)? How are these sacraments related to sacramental expressions in the arts? What does living a sacramental life - as the Body of Christ - really entail? This seminar explores these questions. THE LINK BETWEEN KNOWING & LOVING: AN EPISTEMOLOGICAL EXCAVATION (Charlie Peacock, 3 sessions) How do we know what we know? What's the connection between knowing, doing and creating - art-making - and the rest of life and faith? This seminar knits these questions into a rainbow of other threads including Noam Chomsky, Jack Kerouac, Cling Peaches, and N. T. Wright. Veteran artist and art advocate Charlie Peacock shares his experiences and material from a forthcoming book in this journey of faith and creativity. A HIDDEN WHOLENESS: AN INTRODUCTION TO PARKER PALMER (Gary Uremovich, 3 sessions) Parker Palmer is a Christian sociologist, author, educator, and activist. This seminar surveys his philosophy of individual wholeness in a fragmented world. Among Palmer's central themes: embracing paradox and ambiguity, finding our own unique calling, and creating "circles of trust" in our places of work, worship and community. We'll explore these ideas and begin to apply them.
